Description:

Amanka is a word from one of the languages used by people living in the rural north west of Uganda. It’s a beautiful, rich word that means ‘family’. Yet, in the forests and villages of this part of Uganda – and across much of tropical Africa and Asia – families are at war. In the narrowing margins between forest and farm, human and non-human, there is a growing conflict. A deadly conflict.
The Amanka Book Project has been coordinated by writer, David Blissett and primate curator, Lou Grossfeldt. They celebrate our closest living relatives, by sharing the stories and experiences of the people who are working, fighting, and sometimes risking their lives to save them. The focus is on all ape species (gorilla, orangutan, chimpanzee, bonobo and the gibbon family). These are stories of sacrifice and courage and hope; tears and happiness; love and loss. In each chapter, Lou and David speak with people who devote their lives to the conservation and wellbeing of the apes. This includes scientists, researchers, caregivers, vets, filmmakers and conservation advocates. Many of the stories in this book have never been told before and will give readers a direct insight into the day-to-day heartaches, challenges and joys of working with these intelligent, sentient beings.
‘We wrote this book to raise awareness of the plight of our ape family and to share the stories of the unsung heroes who are trying to help them. All contributors have donated to this project and profits from book sales will be donated to various ape conservation and enrichment programs or projects’ - Lou Grossfeldt and David Blissett.

Description:

A juicy piece of trivia is like a beautiful fresh cut of protein. It needs to be handled just right. Some fillets of trivia work well as a question, others are best posed as a ‘Did you know’. Some have so much flesh on them that they are better served up as a whole story or essay. That is what you will find between these pages, a smorgasbord of trivia treats to feast upon. Like a buffet on a cruise ship, you can start at the beginning and work your way along, you can push in at any point for the one tasty treat that you want, or you can fill a small plate and come back over and over again.

This is possibly the most complete book of Rock Trivia ever compiled and the morsels will astonish …

Did you know that in 2013 Chubby Checker sued Hewlett-Packard over a 99-cent app called the ‘Chubby Checker’ which allowed users to enter a man’s shoe size to estimate the size of his penis? He claimed that the product would cause damage to his goodwill, tarnishing his image. Trivia with a twist?

Did you know that Charles Manson co-wrote a song for the Beach Boys?

Plus hundreds of questions to tease and expand the mind.

"At last ... a rock trivia book that is not at all trivial! This is a remarkable collection of questions, facts, myths, stories, jokes, riddles and answers. Number one with a bullet!" - Brian Nankervis, ABC Radio and RocKwiz host.

"This is the book that we music trivia nuts have been waiting for. Even if you think you know it all there'll be something that surprises you. Read it from front to back or just dip into it when you need a trivia top up. I love it!" - Murray Cook, The Wiggles, The Soul Movers

Description:

Gerald Diffey has spent four decades immersed in the world of food, wine and hospitality, from early days waiting tables in old English hotels to establishing two of the best places in the world to drink and eat: the award-winning Gerald’s Bar in North Carlton – Heston Blumenthal described it as ‘a proper, proper old fashioned sort of bar’ – and Gerald’s Bar in San Sebastian.

Beggars Belief is a collection of funny, poignant, insightful and just plain ludicrous stories from Gerald’s life in kitchens and behind bars: his formative years in the UK, memories of food and family; tales and tips from forty years of service; journeys and meals, people and places, from lunch on the side of a volcano in Sicily to dinner on a beach in East Timor; stories and recipes and drinks suggestions from North Carlton and San Sebastian; vignettes, slices of life, observations.

‘Romance,’ writes Gerald in the introduction. ‘That’s what I sell. Sensual pleasures. Sights, sounds, smells, touch, taste. Cyrano de Bergerac said: “I have tried to live my whole life with panache.” If I said that, I’d sound like a twat. But you get the drift. I’m off to bone some quails.’

Description:

Being Peta provides a brave, honest firsthand account by a young person of what it's like to live with leukaemia. It is a book that will provide comfort and companionship to sufferers and their loved ones.
In the world of cancer, teenagers are renowned for not articulating their feelings about living with their illness. But sixteen-year-old Peta Margetts was brave enough to do that: with a wonderful sense of humour as well as an ability to put all of the upheaval into perspective, Peta reflects on the positives amid a regime of chemotherapy. Her rawness and honesty are complemented by her wit and vivacity as she confronts the possibilities that she may die.
In Being Peta, she relives her battle with leukaemia after her initial diagnosis. Her reflections illuminate the tedium that hospital life brings and how all of the medical procedures around her were secondary to everything else around her: school, friends, work and, above all, family.
While the focus of the book is Peta's own writing, her mother, Leonie, completes the story through her account of events. Also included in Being Peta are letters from family and friends on how they have been affected by the death of a young girl who was so important to so many people.
"Neither of us really believed what we were being told. It wasn't the end of the treatment, but we had no doubt of the gravity of our situation.
[...]
We went into another room, where we sat and tried to digest the news. Peta grabbed my
hand, looked into my eyes and firmly said, 'I just think there are worse things in the world than a seventeen-year-old girl dying!' "

Description:

Four and a half months after her boyfriend became a paraplegic in a motorbike accident, he and Emma travelled to Australia, Emma's home country, and embarked upon a 18,000 kilometre backpacking trip.
This story takes the reader on a whirlwind trip around Australia. A young woman struggling to accept her boyfriend's paralysis, and a paraplegic man backpacking during a time many spinal injured patients remain in hospital.
Written with honesty, insight and dark humour, Emma examines the dynamics of the relationship, impact of the injury, difficulties faced learning to live in a wheelchair in a challenging country, and encountering perceptions of the disabled.
Ultimately, this is a compelling love story.
I believe not only people experiencing spinal injuries, their family and friends would be interested in my book, but also people interested in travel and memoir. Kev and I were a typical young couple working ski seasons, and my book shows that life can change quickly and dramatically. - Emma White

These stories are interwoven with the latest research from thought leaders around the obstacles and pitfalls in leaving the workforce for a time, and include practical and proven strategies to overcome these hurdles.

Description:

Cynthia Reed, single mother, psychiatric nurse, novelist and connoisseur, married Sidney Nolan in Sydney in 1948. England served as their home base from 1953 till her death in 1976, territory charted in her four travel books.
This biography is drawn from her books in depth and from her intimate letters to her brother John and his wife, Sunday Reed between 1927, when she was nineteen, and 1944 when their correspondence ceased.
Her unpopularity in Australia in the sixties is accounted for and the stereotypes of the envious sister-in-law, the mad artist's wife and the nihilistic suicide dismantled.

Description:

Daddy Who? is the story of a phenomenon, a band that in eighteen short months changed the course of Australian rock history.
Author and musician Craig Horne was with Daddy Cool every inch of the way. With an insider's view, he tracks the journey from when they burst onto the scene in October 1970, with their infectious doo-wop mayhem, and follows their rapid rise to the top—when they were on the front cover of every newspaper and rock magazine in the country, and when radio churned out hits like 'Eagle Rock', 'Come Back Again' and 'Hi Honey Ho!' virtually nonstop.
The book reveals the madness of Daddy Cool's three US tours, from their showcase performance at LA's Whisky A Go Go, to New York's famed Madison Square Garden, and supporting the likes of Elvin Bishop, Fleetwood Mac, Deep Purple, Little Feat and Captain Beefheart.
"Daddy Who? is the first book to tell the complete story of the enduring legacy of one of the most unique and much loved bands Australia has ever produced.
Daddy Cool are one of the most impressive bands I've ever heard ... And 'Eagle Rock' is one of my favourite tracks of all time." — Sir Elton John, 1975
