Description:

A practical guide for parents and parent educators.
"This book provides sound information for both parents and professionals about the developing needs and experiences of children." - Dr Sue Vardon AO, Former CEO Child Protection and Family Services, South Australia
The memory of sexual abuse in childhood never leaves its victims. Likewise the memory of bullying never goes away. Advances in technology are making our children more vulnerable to both.
Professor Briggs, an expert in child protection, draws on a lifetime of research and practical experience to assist with today's parenting issues.
In 'Smart Parenting for Safer Kids' parents will learn how to:
- Recognise the dangers to children in modern Western society.
- Build stronger kids and help them make smart choices.
- Choose safe, high-quality childcare and child minders.
- Safeguard children in potentially dangerous situations, including bullying, cyberspace and the internet.
- Protect against child sexual abuse.
- Parent through adolescence.
- Choose safe student exchanges.
Professor Briggs, who received an Order of Australia for her work into child protection, tells parents exactly what they should be worried about and how to protect their children from the dangers in the modern world.

Description:

This beautifully illustrated story teaches children about the importance of understanding and accepting change and difference in all people. A perfect forest grew tall and proud on the land. One day a bird from a faraway place flew over the forest and dropped a different seed. The other trees in the forest didn't like this 'difference' and did everything in their power to block the little tree's growth. But slowly they learn that we were all, at some point, a seed from a faraway place. As seen on ABC's 'PlaySchool'.

Description:

This warm and lively biography provides insight not just into the life of Alf Pollard, but also into Australian life from the 1920s right through to the 1990s. Born almost 100 years ago in Melbourne, Alf Pollard spent most of his childhood on Norfolk Island where his family leased a banana plantation. Despite having virtually no education in his early years, Pollard’s tenacity and natural intelligence saw him top the state in the NSW Leaving Certificate and graduate from university with honours. He later gained a Masters degree and a PhD, and at age 23 became one of the youngest people ever to qualify as an actuary. A brilliant businessman, Pollard became Deputy General Manager of the MLC in 1954, aged just 37, but was later controversially embroiled in the scandalous H.G. Palmer affair that led to his forced resignation from the MLC in January 1966. He was later appointed as the Foundation Professor in Economic Statistics at Macquarie University, where he founded the first university actuarial program in the world. Pollard received many awards during his lifetime, including an Order of Australia, NSW Father of the Year and a prestigious Doctor of Science degree.  He served on the boards of many companies, and helped save both the Sydney Eisteddfod and the Wesley Mission from bankruptcy.

Description:

On a warm day in May 2004, Liz Byron set off from Cooktown with her two companions, donkeys Grace and Charley, on a self-imposed challenge to walk 2500 kilometres of the Bicentennial National Trail over 9 months. This epic journey was a rite of passage to mark leaving 40 years of marriage and embarking on life as a single woman at the age of 61. She foresaw that self-reliance, physical stamina and route-finding would be challenges, but couldn’t have known how the outback environment in Queensland was to test her to the limit. Years of drought had left much of her route a dusty wasteland, without food or water for her animals. Years of suffering from childhood abuse and a family tragedy had left her unwilling to ask for help. Walking became a meditation, an exercise in being in the moment even when that moment was 43 degrees or she hadn’t eaten for 7 hours. In her moving memoir, Liz reveals how she healed herself step-by-step on the way to her new home in northern NSW - by learning to trust her intuition, the wisdom of her animals and the kindness of strangers.
