Description: Parental anxiety has reached epidemic proportions. We feel an overwhelming need to protect and fix our baby from the moment of birth, yet we often do not know what to do. We get frustrated and stressed, and when this overwhelms us, the whole family is at risk. How can we catch stress early before parenting habits are first created? Dr Leon Levitt is an experienced GP and obstetrician, with great success in easing the path for parents through these early months and years. With practical examples from his practice, he presents important principles, rules and strategies to better navigate and enjoy the journey. He offers a complete paradigm shift in approach to babies. The newborn baby’s progressive, neurological development is completely different from the baby after four months, and therefore requires a different parental mindset. For the baby in the first four months, the golden rule is First Calm Down. Dr Levitt describes the true goals of parenting and gives practical approaches to colic, reflux, feeding and sleep. This child behaves according to inherited automatic reflexes, so the parents are freed from the need to ‘fix’ the distressed baby, and can learn to meet the baby’s needs in the moment. Seven strategies are explored, encouraging parents to withdraw from the specific issue with their baby and instead use one or more of these broad approaches to bring back calmness, control and joy. The book concludes with a guide to common medical issues parents have with their baby. |

Description: The spread of crystal methamphetamine use sees more and more families face a horrifying reality - their child or spouse or parent is an addict. Their world is a hell where Ice rules and it is far from OK. Ice took families, society and the drug-addiction treatment sector by surprise. Young users often bypassed alcohol, 'soft' and party drug use, so the first mind-altering substance they try is ice, the world's strongest stimulant. A new kind of mature addict emerged, a drug-using individual who seemed to manage to navigate life normally before, and then suddenly abandoned everything. People become withered, psychotic, mumbling ghosts. The speed of their journey broke all previous records. Their unmanageability became legendary. The core of this book is not the drug, but the people: the addict who desperately needs help, and the people around the addict who need clear and practical information about the solution. With the right treatment, addicts do recover. |

Description: This is a crime fiction story with a difference. Red Coltrane would love nothing more than to be a champion relay runner. But that dream disappeared when motor neurone disease took hold of his body. Red also has an intellectual disability, and he lives in supported accommodation with three other variously disabled men, including Johnny, whose prime means of communication is to hum. But today Red's life has just become even more difficult. He's been charged with murder, and police suspect he is the serial arsonist who has been torching Melbourne's churches. Red thinks he knows what's going on, but his inability to communicate means his version of events may forever remain a mystery. When he stumbles across some information that he knows he shouldn't possess, Red becomes sure that the only way to stop the fires is to find the arsonist. That search will take all of Red's resolve, and will force him to rely more than he ever thought possible on his housemates and on the one person he's sure won't let him down, his long-term carer and hero, Pedro. |

Description: In White Light, a single mother seeks refuge in a religious cult, a young girl hijacks road machinery while her family dresses for church, another family down on their luck finds a gold ingot and the stability of a marriage is threatened by the arrival of a well-travelled ex-lover. O'Flynn takes us into his local neighbourhood where people, both the ordinary and the bizarre, wrestle with the challenges and puzzles that life throws at them. His characters delight us and his language never ceases to surprise. In this eclectic collection, O'Flynn, an accomplished poet, turns his hand to linked short stories, micro-fictions and monologues. He displays ventriloquist-like skill, conjuring Shakespeare's Iago, an illiterate inmate called Banjo and a famous Australian poet who finds herself trapped in a toilet cubicle. Monopoly and ping-pong become extended metaphors for the games of everyday life. The result is a heady mix of wordplay, philosophical ruminations and astute social observation. "O'Flynn's faultless ear for laconic Aussie parlance, his wry ability to turn a story in a moment from comedy to tragedy and back again, his exhilaratingly deft range...all this makes him one of a kind, in my opinion. A hugely enjoyable collection." CATE KENNEDY |

Description: Whoring Around, a novella in six stories. Prologue Blowing It Between Whores Dreaming of Glory A Sense of Propriety More and more we lunched at his tennis club. He had recently become its honorary treasurer. I remember an afternoon, with the washed blues and faint yellows of early winter, when we ate on the terrace. The stonework was damp where the sun had not touched it. The other tables were empty, so it was early in the week. Humphrey's world was a cradle of security, supported by cocktail parties, sporting clubs and fours of Bridge. His wife Mimi derides his effort to take a top position in the Fossil Extracts Conference. She was wrong. His Cartel takes him to Tokyo, where the pattern of his life falls into early conferences with Japanese executives until late, then sessions in the whore houses of the Ginza and their astonishing practises, which captivate him because he knows Mimi was happy to see him go. Until: Sitting in a profane and prodigal night-club next to a young and inexplicable whore was not where he wanted to be. He felt a fondness for the banal and lustreless dinner tables of his friends and for the comfort of his own rooms and wardrobes, his office and his club. Before the lights darkened again for the next act he left the table, to find the toilet, he told her, paid on his way out, and took a cab back to his hotel. |

Description: When Deborah Thomson met Wayne, she was a shy, introverted 24-year-old student. He was a loud charismatic young man. His temper was an issue but one she hoped they could work on. Four years later, the married couple now ran a business together, and their first child was born. Yet, any dreams of peaceful family life were quickly crushed by Wayne's increasingly violent and controlling behaviour. Life turned into a cycle of hope, fear and pain, and her marriage into a prison from which there was no escaping. It lasted 17 years. Based on the journals the author kept throughout the ordeal, Whose Life Is It Anyway is a chilling memoir of her agonising years living and working with her abuser. "A powerful, frightening story, highlighting a world I do not understand, fortunately a world the author has escaped from." - Ian Waller, Burnie, Tasmania |
