Description:

Also: weiß, schwarz und schwarzweiß.

Description:

This is a crime fiction story with a difference. Red Coltrane would love nothing more than to be a champion relay runner. But that dream disappeared when motor neurone disease took hold of his body. Red also has an intellectual disability, and he lives in supported accommodation with three other variously disabled men, including Johnny, whose prime means of communication is to hum. But today Red's life has just become even more difficult.
He's been charged with murder, and police suspect he is the serial arsonist who has been torching Melbourne's churches. Red thinks he knows what's going on, but his inability to communicate means his version of events may forever remain a mystery.
When he stumbles across some information that he knows he shouldn't possess, Red becomes sure that the only way to stop the fires is to find the arsonist. That search will take all of Red's resolve, and will force him to rely more than he ever thought possible on his housemates and on the one person he's sure won't let him down, his long-term carer and hero, Pedro.

Description:

In White Light, a single mother seeks refuge in a religious cult, a young girl hijacks road machinery while her family dresses for church, another family down on their luck finds a gold ingot and the stability of a marriage is threatened by the arrival of a well-travelled ex-lover.
O'Flynn takes us into his local neighbourhood where people, both the ordinary and the bizarre, wrestle with the challenges and puzzles that life throws at them. His characters delight us and his language never ceases to surprise.
In this eclectic collection, O'Flynn, an accomplished poet, turns his hand to linked short stories, micro-fictions and monologues. He displays ventriloquist-like skill, conjuring Shakespeare's Iago, an illiterate inmate called Banjo and a famous Australian poet who finds herself trapped in a toilet cubicle. Monopoly and ping-pong become extended metaphors for the games of everyday life. The result is a heady mix of wordplay, philosophical ruminations and astute social observation.
"O'Flynn's faultless ear for laconic Aussie parlance, his wry ability to turn a story in a moment from comedy to tragedy and back again, his exhilaratingly deft range...all this makes him one of a kind, in my opinion. A hugely enjoyable collection." CATE KENNEDY

Description:

Whoring Around, a novella in six stories.
Prologue
Blowing It
Between Whores
Dreaming of Glory
A Sense of Propriety
More and more we lunched at his tennis club. He had recently become its honorary treasurer. I remember an afternoon, with the washed blues and faint yellows of early winter, when we ate on the terrace. The stonework was damp where the sun had not touched it. The other tables were empty, so it was early in the week.
Humphrey's world was a cradle of security, supported by cocktail parties, sporting clubs and fours of Bridge. His wife Mimi derides his effort to take a top position in the Fossil Extracts Conference. She was wrong.
His Cartel takes him to Tokyo, where the pattern of his life falls into early conferences with Japanese executives until late, then sessions in the whore houses of the Ginza and their astonishing practises, which captivate him because he knows Mimi was happy to see him go.
Until:
Sitting in a profane and prodigal night-club next to a young and inexplicable whore was not where he wanted to be. He felt a fondness for the banal and lustreless dinner tables of his friends and for the comfort of his own rooms and wardrobes, his office and his club. Before the lights darkened again for the next act he left the table, to find the toilet, he told her, paid on his way out, and took a cab back to his hotel.

Description:

From its initial appearance, Wild Cat Falling was recognised as a profoundly important work. Mudrooroo first published it under the name Colin Johnson. And when it was released by Angus & Robertson in 1965, Aboriginals were not considered Australian citizens, did not have the right to vote, and no novel written by an Aboriginal Australian had made it to print.
In telling the story of a symbolically nameless young Aboriginal man, and of his re-entry into society after a period of incarceration, Mudrooroo offered insights into an Aboriginal's sense of isolation, his literal and metaphorical imprisonment, and his estrangement from his own people and culture. The young man belongs neither to the white society that shuns him nor to the Aboriginal fringe dwellers who inhabit the white society's periphery. While he can 'talk the talk' of the subversive white 'bodgies', they offer no more clue to his identity than do the university students he charms with his parodic existential angst.
This fiftieth anniversary edition of Mudrooroo's Wild Cat Falling, including an updated introduction and autobiography by Mudrooroo, highlights this writer's importance to Australian literature. Wild Cat Falling has been in print continuously since its initial publication in 1965. It is frequently read as a school and university text, and it has helped to establish Mudrooroo as a writer recognised widely throughout the world.

Description:

'Well, I can dream can't I? Dream? - nightmares, more like it. All I have to do is dream, dream, dream, scream... I'm now walking through this posh suburb, walking? - more like slinking. Wildcat on the prowl. Naw, though maybe checking out the streets for a bust. Eyes dart this way, that way, all ways, focus, man, on the main chance. Take it and break it real good; but is there any chances left? Not with my luck!'
Wildcat is out of prison, but not for long. In this sequel to Wild Cat Falling, Mudrooroo takes us inside the life of the urban Aboriginal. Set in the boom years of Perth bankers and entrepreneurs, we see the same wheeling and dealing from inside Fremantle prison. Wildcat has to survive, and understand the new order, set by the Chief Warder and an ex-Indian Army officer. Soon he too is part of their great creation, The Panopticon Prison Reform Society.
A novel by one of Australia's most revolutionary stylists.

Description:

When Bonaparte sets out to investigate two bizarre murders near the dusty little outback town of Carie, all the odds are against him. The crimes were committed a year before, the scent cold, and any clues that may have survived have been confused by a ham-fisted city policeman. As Bony follows the trail he is first threatened and then attacked by the mysterious murderer. It's a case that will tax his ingenuity to the limit... if he lives to see it through.

Excellent set up for a story, good cast of characters, perplexing confusion of suspects, and perceptive unravelling of tangled threads. - Kirkus Review

Description:

The discovery of a stolen red monoplane on the dry, flat bottom of Emu Lake meant many things for different folks. For Elizabeth Nettlefold, the chance to nurse its strangely ill meant renewed purpose in life. For Dr Knowles, brilliant physician and town drunk, it meant the revival of a romantic dream. For some it meant a murder plan gone awry, and for Bonaparte, it meant one of the toughest cases of his career.

This story brings life the anguish of those people, young and old, suffering the consequences of Alzheimer's disease. It is a story that illuminates many factual aspects of the nature of this illness while fictionally bringing us into the lives of those transformed by its devastating effects.
The author has created sympathetic and credible characters whose plights we share as they confront the ways in which this tragic illness affects not only those directly stricken but also their close relatives and friends.
The carefully constructed narrative shows vividly how the disease can strike anyone: Rob, a successful young medical researcher with a promising career; his mother, a respected lawyer with a life of achievement, and all those within their immediate orbit are changed utterly by the onset of this disease.
There are many subsidiary contemporary elements introduced by the engaging narrative. Gay relationships, for example, are represented positively and respectfully so that we see gay couples living faithful, loving and socially acceptable lives.
The author also implies some of the dangers inherent in placing too much faith in the contemporary (and often exploitative) trent to online relationships.
There are tragedies and triumphs in this tight and suspenseful narrative. It is an 'emotional roller-coaster', both poignant and uplifting. It is also a compelling read.

Two gentlemen were sharing a house together after both their wives had died; both suffered dementia. One of them, Harry, asked his housemate Frank if he wanted anything up at the shops.
"Why would I bother Harry? You'll forget by the time you get out the back door."
"No, don't be silly, of course I'll remember. I'm feeling good today."
"Ok, do you know those ice-creams that have a chocolate flake sticking out of it?"
"Yeah!"
"Well I want one of them."
"Ok, done."
"What did I ask for?"
"You want one of those ice-creams that have a chocolate flake sticking out of it."
"Seeing you remembered that, I want hundreds and thousands sprinkled over the whole lot. Oh forget it, you'll never remember."
"I will, I promise."
Harry left the house to walk the one kilometre to the shops; three hours later he returned and plonked a brown paper bag down on the kitchen table.
"There's your pie."
Frank looked inside the bag.
"For god's sake, you forgot the sauce!"
